Try not to grab the handles or straps directly with your hands (as much as possible). Use your forearm to grab the bag. Your hands transfer oils onto the leather and the patina of the leather will be distributed unevenly. So often our hands are wet or damp from not drying them thoroughly, or have oils or lotions on them that can be transferred to the leather strap/handles.
